A Characterization of Undirected Graphs Admitting Optimal Cost Shares

چکیده
In a seminal paper, Chen, Roughgarden and Valiant [7] studied cost sharing protocols for network design with the objective to implement a low-cost Steiner forest as a Nash equilibrium of an induced cost-sharing game. One of the most intriguing open problems up to date is to understand the power of budget-balanced and separable cost sharing protocols in order to induce low-cost Steiner forests. In this work, we focus on undirected networks and analyze topological properties of the underlying graph so that an optimal Steiner forest can be implemented as a Nash equilibrium (by some separable cost sharing protocol) independent of the edge costs. We term a graph efficient if the above stated property holds. As our main result, we give a complete characterization of efficient undirected graphs for two-player network design games: an undirected graph is efficient if and only if it does not not contain at least one out of few forbidden subgraphs. Our characterization implies that several graph classes are efficient: generalized series-parallel graphs, fan and wheel graphs and graphs with small cycles.

Characterization of signed paths and cycles admitting minus dominating function
If G = (V, E, σ) is a finite signed graph, a function f : V → {−1, 0, 1} is a minusdominating function (MDF) of G if f(u) +summation over all vertices v∈N(u) of σ(uv)f(v) ≥ 1 for all u ∈ V . In this paper we characterize signed paths and cycles admitting an MDF.
متن کاملDesigning Network Protocols for Good Equilibria
Designing and deploying a network protocol determines the rules by which end users interact with each other and with the network. We consider the problem of designing a protocol to optimize the equilibrium behavior of a network with selfish users. We consider network costsharing games, where the set of Nash equilibria depends fundamentally on the choice of an edge cost-sharing protocol. Previou...
متن کاملSubgraphs Satisfying MSO Properties on z-Topologically Orderable Digraphs
We introduce the notion of z-topological orderings for digraphs. We prove that given a digraph G on n vertices admitting a z-topological ordering, together with such an ordering, one may count the number of subgraphs of G that at the same time satisfy a monadic second order formula φ and are the union of k directed paths, in time f(φ, k, z) · n. Our result implies the polynomial time solvabilit...
متن کاملTime-Space Tradeoffs for Undirected Graph Traversal by Graph Automata
We investigate time-space tradeoffs for traversing undirected graphs, using a variety of structured models that are all variants of Cook and Rackoff's ``Jumping Automata for Graphs.'' Our strongest tradeoff is a quadratic lower bound on the product of time and space for graph traversal. For example, achieving linear time requires linear space, implying that depth-first search is optimal. Since ...
متن کاملA Practical Approach to Drawing Undirected Graphs
Although there is extensive research on drawing graphs, none of the published methods are satisfactory for drawing general undirected graphs. Generating drawings which are optimal with respect to several aesthetic criteria is known to be NP-hard, so all published approaches to the problem have used heuristics. These heuristics are too slow to be practical for graphs of moderate size, and they d...
